Oh boy, where to begin? I love and hate the White Album all at the same time. Obviously it's double the length of all the others, so some statistics get inflated. It has four top 40 songs (still not the most), and ELEVEN bottom 40 songs. Overall it's 12th of 13 albums.
What this says to me is that they should have cut out the crap and made this album half the length. Do you know what would have happened if they made this with the top 15 songs instead of the full list of 30? It's rating would be 150.6 which is quite a bit higher than the NUMBER ONE RANKED MMT at 135.82!
There is so much great on here, but for me it's overwhelmed by the complete pile of garbage included. In my opinion, Why Don't We Do it in the Road is the worst Beatles song there is. If you're not familiar, it means exactly what you think it means. Paul got the idea from watching monkeys in India roaming around the cities, who would just start humping randomly. To me, this isn't a good origin of a song-again, and I'm guessing you would tend to agree. On top of the ridiculous subject matter, he sings it in what I call "Paul's rock and roll voice." (if you're unfamiliar think "Lady Madonna") I hate it when he does this. He has a beautiful singing voice, and when he puts on this veneer it just sounds too fake and over- exaggerated for my tastes.
Let's not end on the negative though. ( I mean we could focus on the fact that this album contains seven songs from ranks 200-213, but why go there?) The top 11 songs here are in the top 100, which ties Please Please Me, but the ratio from good to bad on the 14 track PPM is much better than the one we have listed here. I mean really, two in the top 10, four in the top 30, seven in the top 50! As the Water Boy would say, "that's some high-quality H2O!" Also Glass Onion is amazing, I don't care if you think it's too high.
At the end of the day, I guess we should be thankful for the quality of work that we did get here since everyone in the band was on the verge of murdering each other during the recording. Ironically the fact that they did have to isolate themselves at times, did lead to a very diverse sounding album.
