The first thing that needs pointed out is that I used Let it Be Naked to do this because I feel it's superior in every way. As for the whole "only stuff from when they were together" argument, I feel that this was the better representation of what they wanted contrary to what was actually Spectored- I mean released.
Sort of in the vein of the White Album, this album is both really good and really bad. (Which makes sense since this was recorded after the White Album despite it not being released until '70.) We have three songs coming in in the top 40, while four make the bottom 40. Kind of sums it up doesn't it?
The Long and Winding Road along with Across the Universe are the two songs that benefit the most from the Naked versions. They were both too bloated, and needed room to breathe, allowing for much superior songs to shine through.
For You Blue is a George song that I've always really enjoyed. It's a pretty damn deep cut, but it's so catchy that it's a song that caught my attention the first time I heard it-that's rare for me. I usually need a while to warm up to a song. Is it probably 100 (or more) places too high for most people? Probably. I, however, consider it a hidden gem.
What LIB does have more than anything else is the song of the same name. The song Let it Be is something otherworldly. It's a church hymn and rock song. Huh? How does that make any sense? It really doesn't matter, if I had only it to listen to for the rest of my life, I would be okay with that. I've talked about the "toe-tapper" aspect in other songs that I love, which obvious isn't present here for this one. Let it Be transcends any "toe-tapping" onto a whole other plane where very few songs could possibly exist.
There is an alternate universe where this album was never released. Three of the Beatles had scrapped the idea due to not being happy with it. But that sneaky John along with Phil Spector released it without anyone else's knowledge. Would Paul have made Let it Be with Wings if it was never released as a Beatle song? He had to have known that one was good. It's a staple at all of his shows to this day. It's an interesting thing to think about.
