It's tough following a legend.  In Utero had huge shoes to fill following the massive success of Nevermind.  Honestly it was impossible for any album to be as good as Nevermind was; not just from a quality-perspective, but a cultural one as well.

In Utero was their best shot, and while it can't measure up to the juggernaut, what we're left with is still fantastic stuff.  A lot of this is Cobain's middle finger to the fair-weather fans that jumped on-board during Nevermind's rise to prominence.  He purposely made songs less mainstream, to weed out the phonies. (Song 10's title is oozing with sarcasm) This is blatant from the opening song, Serve the Servants, which is the most underrated song Nirvana ever did, and it kicks In Utero off with a bang.  Teenage angst has paid off well.  Now I'm bored and old.
