Gravity was the first OLP album I ever heard. Their break-through hit in America was Somewhere Out There. Upon initial listening I thought it was okay. Then I heard Not Enough on WWE TV. (I've written about it in the past, which you can read here.) It blew me away on first listen. It still pulls at my heart strings and at the same time rocks my face off. Not too many songs can accomplish that. That's why it's my number one song ever; of any album of any band that I've ever listened to.
I had to buy this album, and I absorbed it like a sponge. Somewhere Out There grew on me, as did every other song. Ironically Bring Back the Sun was the song I liked the least on here initially. But after a few years it grew more significant to me to where I consider it number two on Gravity, and even crept into the top 10 of my big list. Overall Gravity has 4 songs in the top 20, which ties it with Spiritual Machines for the most. Also like Spiritual Machines it only has one in the bottom 20 (although Made of Steel is bottom 21 songs for anyone counting). Happiness... (spoiler) will stay the only album with no songs in the bottom 20.
Yes sentiment plays a large role in my ranking of these songs overall, but I never claimed otherwise. Hardcore fans will claim that this is their "sell-out" album. Which I suppose is true considering it was much different than anything they had done before, and it got them noticed on a larger scale. And while there is a couple of "filler" songs on here, you cannot deny the passion of Not Enough or Bring Back the Sun. Or the incredible message of Innocent.
Being the follow-up to the much-acclaimed Spiritual Machines, they may not have had any choice but to move in a different direction. There could not be a proper "part two" of that one. No Revolver to its Rubber Soul. That's why it was number one to me, and so many others. It was a masterpiece. While many would not claim Gravity as a masterpiece, I would claim it my number two.
