Spotlight On Wasting Light

I've already declared Wasting Light the best album by the Foo Fighters.  Now I'm going to tell you why.  (Part one)

When I listen to Wasting Light I hear the Foo Fighters all grown up.  They have always been a goofball band, and while they retain that in a way, the lyrics and sound seem more mature than anything they have done in the past.

With three guitarists now, it gives them a fuller, louder sound.  Which combined with the refocused lyrics makes for some powerful tunes.  I think this will be the defining Foo album when it is all said and done.  Their previous effort ('07's ESG&P) seemed to have an identity crisis.  They went for the soft, slow, acoustic first half, followed by traditional rock for the second half of the song.  Which is kind of cool for one song, but most of the album was that way.  It didn't work for me anyway.  Wasting Light doesn't have this problem.  It flows really well, and all the songs seem to fit together.

1. Bridge Burning- This is an excellent opener, gets you jumping.  From a scale of 1 to 5 I give it a 4.

2. Rope- This was the first single.  On first hearing, made me think of "Wheels" which isn't a good thing.  The more I listened though, I really like this song.  Hawkin's drumming is outstanding in this.  4.5/5

3. Dear Rosemary- I remember thinking this song was really bland at first, but it has grown on me more than any other on here, to the point that it's one of my favorites.  Listen for a guest vocal.  4.5/5

4. White Limo- This is a very unique song.  The only vocals that sound even close to it are Weenie Beanie back from '95.  Great riff, probably the hardest Foo Fighter song ever.  4/5

5. Arlandria- This was the third single, and it didn't do much charting in the US.  I don't know why.  Freaking great song, almost poppy.  5/5

6. These Days- This song Grohl has said is his best song lyrically that he has ever written, and it's tough to argue.  Very powerful stuff.  4.5/5

7. Back & Forth- I like the verses a lot, and the music too.  But for some reason the chorus kind of annoys me a bit.  Still a good song though.  3.5/5

8.  A Matter of Time- This song seems to be filler material.  Not unlistenable, but not memorable.  3/5

9. Miss the Misery- This contains the phrase "Wasting Light" in it, but other than that nothing seems to important about it to me.  I really don't like the "ooooooooooohhhhhhh ooooooooooooohhhhh" in it.  Very un-Foo, (any wrestling fan might think it sounds like Cody Rhodes' old theme song). 2.5/5

10. I Should Have Known- This may be the one oddball track.  Very slow.  Very personally.  Very revealing.  Very powerful.  A certain Nirvana guy may help out on this one (Obviously not Kurt, so use process of elimination).  4.5/5

11. Walk- At the end of the day this is the best track, and it may be the best Foo Fighter song ever.  It could be their "signature" song.  (I know they close with it sometimes)  It rocks, it's powerful lyrically, musically, emotionally, and the video is hilarious!  5/5

So out of a possible 55 it got a 45 by me.  Which is 82%, and if you want to cheat and cut out tracks 7-9 (the filler stuff), it's a 90%.  I guess what I'm saying, is I love this CD.  So give it a listen if you haven't.
