Text Rant
I have a friend who will not text people. It's not that he doesn't know how to do it, or his phone won't allow it. He just says texting "is dumb." If you send him one asking him a question, or anything that needs a reply, he will just call you back. At first I thought it was strange, but the more I thought about it, he's on to something, at least in theory.
Think about all the stupid things we do with texting.
1. You have a two hour text conversation, whereas if you would have just called the person it would have been over in five minutes.
2. Someone calls you, you miss it, and just text them back asking what they want, like they're not good enough for a call.
3. Or the worst one of all. You do call someone, they don't answer, You hang up, then text them saying, "Hey I just called you!"
Absolutely ridiculous. Don't even get me started on the scenario when you're texting someone who doesn't spell very well, and they text you something that means something else entirely, or you just plain have no idea what they are saying due to certain spelling or grammatical woes. A misplaced "i" in the word "six" could have an entirely different meaning if someone mistakenly put an "e" in there instead.
I will point out that I am guilty of all the aforementioned charges, and when I stop and think about it, I'm not sure why. It is really silly, if you sit and think about it. We are turning so anti-personal that's it's kind of scary and sad. Are we turning into machines?
I do understand the positive aspects of texting, people can answer at their own leisure (which has it's negative aspects as I listed above), if they're busy they're not interrupted by a ringing phone etc., but that's not the point of this rant. The negatives far outweigh the positives.
My dad will call me, ask me two questions, I answer, boom! Conversation over in less than 45 seconds. Nice and efficient. Not long and drawn out, no mistaken cues or tones, just cut and dry. (I realize this is absolutely impossible for females to do.) We also wouldn't have to walk around looking at people staring at their phones, or worse have them run into us because they're not paying any attention to what is going on around them.
If all you took from this is that I'm no anti-texting you're 100% wrong. They are just overused, and way too relied upon for information, or even vital information. It's cool that you can get sports updates, or links, or whatever through texting, I just don't think we should use them for our only lifeline.
I think I may be on the verge of victory.
Peace.
