Big Summer For Big Blockbusters

The list of big blockbusters coming out this year is pretty impressive.  Starting in May, there are at least four different films that could probably be the biggest money-maker of the year.  There are also numerous others that will do just fine at the box-office.  Which ones are they?  When do they come out?  Let's take a look.

Thor comes out May 6th, I'm not real sure what to expect from this one.  I would assume it will do OK because the geeks will support it, but I'm not sure if I can see the mainstream audience accepting it.  I don't know much about the character Thor, and I'm not mainstream at all, so it doesn't seem to bode well for the movie.  However, Iron Man was in a similar situation, and I'm fairly confident it panned out pretty well.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides comes out May 20th.  I'm sure this will be a pretty good movie.  My guess is it will be the second biggest grosser of the year, behind a movie I will get to shortly.  Losing the characters of Will and Elizabeth will hurt the movie I believe.  Depp will be able to carry it for a while, but the dynamic of the film will be much different.  Sparrow needs Will to balance out the goofiness, and I'm not sure if it will work otherwise.  But they could have a new character that does that, so we'll have to wait and see.

The Hangover 2 comes out May 26th.  The first is already heralded as one of the greatest comedies of all-time, and rightfully so.  Hilarious movie.  I'm sure this will be a riot as well, but let's hope they don't get too carried away trying to out-do the first, and it just comes off stupid or gross.  Either way this could be a sleeper for the highest grossing movie of the year.

X-Men First Class comes out June 3rd.  This is the film I'm most excited for.  I'm a huge X-Men fan, and the trailer looks great.  Many people were skeptical of this film when first hearing of it because allegedly was rushed, but the general consensus is that it is a must-see.  Anyone expecting Wolverine shouldn't get their hopes up though.  He doesn't appear to be in it, and shouldn't be because he wasn't an original X-Man, and that's what this is about; the "first class" of the X-Men, hence the title.

Green Lantern opens June 17th and the nerds are ready to rock.  Again, me personally, I don't know much about it.  I do know that the suit looks terrible, and many of my friends think they are going to try too hard to make it a comedy (Like Iron Man).  I think it will do OK, but I don't have very high hopes for it, and probably won't see it.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens July 1st.  I'm interested to see where they go with this film.  It's supposed to be the last, and that's fine, but what's left to do?  Megan Fox got fired, so anyone seeing it specifically for her, better check out now.  I don't really care because she isn't relevant to the plot anyway.  Again, this should be a huge money-maker.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part II opens July 15th.  Now here is my pick for the biggest film of the year.  Harry Potter equals money.  Harry Potter plus last film plus crying dorks soaking in the film multiple times in theater to savor the experience, equals massive revenue.  I've never seen the films, but apparently they get better and better.  I'm sure they won't let the Potter fans down on this one, and who knows maybe it will top Avatar?

Captain America: The First Avenger opens July 22nd.  Here again is another somewhat obscure super hero (that makes 3) getting a movie this summer.  I could pretty much copy and paste what I wrote for Thor here, but I won't.  This one will be a tad different because it takes place in the 40's.  I'm not sure if that will help or hurt it.

This isn't a summer movie, but for anyone who cares the final Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn Part 1 comes out in November.  Technically not the last, since it's divided into two, but it's all from the same book, and allegedly very scandalous.  Myself, along with every other heterosexual male doesn't care about this one, however since I'm talking big films, I'm positive this will be one and should mention it.

That's a lot of potential hits for one summer.  Next year is supposed to be more of the same, with the headliner being The Dark Knight Rises.  So grab your popcorn, and probably grab the tickets early because many of these will be sold out very quickly.
