Front man Ed Roland once said that he didn't even consider this a true debut album.  It was more a collection of demos that he by himself put together.  On some tracks this is quite evident.  They really do sound like songs recorded in a basement.  But, then you have Shine.

Shine is arguably CS's most popular song.  It's a fantastic achievement not just for them personally, but in all of music.  It's regularly cited as one of the top songs of the era.  Who am I to argue?  I have it at number five, and it almost crept up a spot or two on top of that.  Unfortunately that's the only song in the top 20.  Conversely it also has only one song in the bottom 20.  (Scream is truly awful.)  So what you're left with is a bunch of songs somewhere in the middle.  Which really isn't that bad for a bunch of "demos."
