I first need to point out that I used the two bonus tracks from the deluxe "Burn Burn Burn" version. I didn't call this Burn x3 because that doesn't have as nice ring to it now does it? No other album had a bonus version (in America) that I'm aware of, other than this one. I'm sure it was just a cash-grab, but the two songs, Right Stuff and Time Bomb, should have been included on the initial release. They're two of the top four songs on the album for crying out loud!
The Right Stuff took a while to grow on me because of the sexual nature of the song (especially the video). It was the one area where OLP never went before, and I was taken aback by it. But then it grew on me. It's a super-catchy song that I consider one of their better ones.
Had I not used the bonus tracks, the overall ranking of the album would have been much lower. I haven't done the math for it, but I would wager it would be in contention for worst OLP album. But I had to include them because they are such good tunes that needed recognition. Feel free to call it cheating if you wish.
While not as bad as the previous album, Burn's bottom 20 songs aren't all that spectacular themselves. There are three of them that qualify for the bottom 12. Refuge barely squeaks by at 23rd from the bottom. (Granted it is a much better song than the other three obviously.)
So with all the negative being thrown around, what is there to be optimistic about? Well the brilliance that is Paper Moon of course. There are only three OLP songs that blew me away on first listen. I've already praised Not Enough as one. Paper Moon is the second. Beautiful lyrics that were very appropriate to a person in my life at the time. When I was making this list, I knew it would be top five for sure, but I will say I was a little surprised it landed at number 2. Not too surprised though! The Right Stuff is the only other song that joins it in the top 20. (But I must say that the middle ranked portion of the album is pretty damn strong all things considered.)
